Dill is a very popular herb and has got use in various fields such as – addition to culinary, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry, preparation of liquors and of course in making of natural medicine. So it is really important to learn the harvesting process of dill such that we need not to buy it always but can easily grow it in our home.
While talking about harvesting it is important to know about the exact moment for the harvest, in what way harvesting should be carried out and the kind of tools that should be used for harvesting.
After 6 to 10 weeks of planting, dill plant can be harvested.
The harvesting of the leaves of dill can be done in two periods of the cultivation of the plant. The first is done from July to August, while the second will be ready between September and October. It always depends on the time in which the planting took place.
If our main aim is to extract oil from the dill then the harvesting of the plant should be done when the time in which its flowers are open is ending.
The dill seed should be harvested only when it is fully mature, usually between September and October.
If the seeds are needed for culinary ingredient or as a healing recipes then harvesting should be done after the flower have a dark shape.
How dill is harvested in large crops?
If the plant is to be harvested in a small scale i.e. in home then it’s really very much easy. It can be done without the help of any special tools. Just extreme care is required for that task as it is completely manual.
However, if the crops are from industrial and commercial purposes, the procedure of how the dill is harvested will be mechanized.
When all the leaves are same, they are harvested by a machine called normal scythe as well as with a scythe-tying machine.
The dill seeds at extensive level are harvested mechanically with harvesters to minimize the waste and loss of them.
